Common Questions
Outlet Installation FAQs
How much does it cost to install an electrical outlet in NJ?
Adding a standard outlet to an existing circuit in Hudson County typically runs $150–$300 installed, including materials and labor. A GFCI outlet runs $180–$350. Outlets that need a new dedicated circuit run back to the panel — like a 240V appliance outlet or an outdoor circuit — run $300–$700 depending on the wire run. Installing several outlets in one visit lowers the per-outlet cost. We give a written price before any work.
Can you add a new outlet where there isn't one now?
Yes. We add outlets to existing rooms by tapping a nearby circuit (if it has capacity) or running a new circuit from the panel for higher-demand locations. In finished walls we fish the wire to keep cutting and patching to a minimum. We will assess the nearest circuit during the estimate and tell you whether it can support the new outlet or needs its own line.
Where does NJ code require GFCI outlets?
Under the NEC adopted in New Jersey, GFCI (ground-fault) protection is required in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, basements, outdoors, and anywhere near water. Newer code also expands GFCI requirements to additional 120V and some 240V circuits. If you are adding an outlet in any of these areas, we install GFCI protection as part of bringing it up to code.
I need a 240V outlet for a dryer, range, or EV charger — can you do that?
Yes. 240V outlets (NEMA 14-30 for dryers, 14-50 for ranges and EV chargers) require a dedicated double-pole breaker and heavier-gauge wire run from the panel. This is a different job than a standard 120V outlet — it is a full dedicated circuit. For EV charging specifically, see our EV charger installation page. We confirm your panel has the capacity before installing.
Why is my outlet not working, warm, or sparking?
A dead outlet can be a tripped GFCI, a loose connection, or a failed receptacle. An outlet that is warm to the touch, sparks, or has scorch marks is a fire hazard — usually a loose or worn connection — and should be addressed right away. We repair or replace failing outlets and check the rest of the circuit for the same issue. For active hazards we offer same-day service.
Do you install USB, smart, and outdoor outlets?
Yes — USB/USB-C combo outlets, smart Wi-Fi outlets, weather-resistant outdoor outlets with in-use covers, floor outlets, and switched outlets are all common requests. Outdoor and wet-location outlets must be GFCI-protected and use the correct covers to meet code, which we handle as standard.
