Why the panel brand matters (and when it doesn't)
When you're getting a panel upgrade in New Jersey, the brand of panel your electrician installs is one of those details most homeowners don't think about — until they start getting quotes and see different brands on different proposals. So let's clear up what actually matters.
The three major panel brands you'll see in NJ residential work are Siemens, Eaton (which includes the Cutler-Hammer and BR lines), and Square D (made by Schneider Electric, including the Homeline and QO lines). All three make code-compliant, UL-listed panels that will serve your home safely for decades. The differences come down to features, breaker availability, and price.
Here's our honest take on each brand — based on installing all three across hundreds of NJ homes since 1977.
Square D: the industry workhorse
Square D is the most commonly installed residential panel brand in the United States, and for good reason. Their QO line (the orange-handled breakers) is what most electricians consider the premium residential option, while the Homeline (the yellow-handled breakers) is the value option.
What we like: The QO panels use a bolt-on breaker design that creates a more secure connection than the plug-on style. They have the widest breaker availability — you can find QO breakers at virtually every electrical supply house and hardware store in NJ, which matters if you ever need to add a circuit. The bus bar is copper, which provides better conductivity and corrosion resistance than aluminum alternatives.
What to know: QO panels and breakers cost about 15–20% more than comparable Siemens or Eaton products. The Homeline panels are priced competitively but use a plug-on design rather than bolt-on. For most homeowners, the Homeline is perfectly adequate — the QO is the choice when you want the best available.
Price range installed (200-amp): $180–$250 for the panel box itself. Homeline runs about $130–$180. Breakers average $8–$15 each (standard), $35–$50 (AFCI/GFCI combo).
Siemens: reliable and cost-effective
Siemens panels are widely used across NJ and offer excellent value. Their residential line uses a plug-on breaker design and aluminum bus bars (copper-plated on higher-end models).
What we like: Siemens panels are well-built, competitively priced, and have good breaker availability in the NJ market. Their AFCI and combination AFCI/GFCI breakers work reliably — important because NJ code now requires AFCI protection on most bedroom and living space circuits. Siemens also offers some of the more affordable smart breaker options if you're interested in energy monitoring without going full smart panel.
What to know: The plug-on breaker design is the industry standard and perfectly safe, but some electricians prefer the bolt-on feel of the Square D QO. Siemens has had occasional breaker availability issues in the NJ supply chain, though this has improved significantly since 2024.
Price range installed (200-amp): $150–$200 for the panel box. Breakers average $6–$12 (standard), $30–$45 (AFCI/GFCI combo).
Eaton: premium options and the CH legacy
Eaton's residential panel lineup includes the BR series (value line) and the CH series (premium line, the continuation of the legendary Cutler-Hammer brand). The CH panels use a bolt-on breaker design and have a reputation for rock-solid construction.
What we like: The CH series is arguably the best-built residential panel on the market. The bolt-on design, copper bus bars, and heavy-gauge steel enclosure give it a quality feel that's immediately apparent. Eaton also has the best whole-home surge protection integration — their CHSPT2ULTRA mounts directly in the panel and provides excellent surge protection for sensitive electronics.
What to know: CH breakers are more expensive and less widely stocked than Square D or Siemens. The BR series uses a plug-on design and aluminum bus bar — it's comparable to Siemens and Homeline in quality and price. If you're going Eaton, the CH series is where the value is; the BR series doesn't offer a compelling reason to choose it over Siemens.
Price range installed (200-amp): CH series: $200–$280. BR series: $140–$190. CH breakers average $10–$18 (standard), $40–$55 (AFCI/GFCI combo).
Head-to-head comparison
Here's how the three brands stack up on the features that matter most for NJ homeowners:
Build quality: Eaton CH and Square D QO are the top tier — both use bolt-on breakers and copper bus bars. Siemens and the value lines (Homeline, BR) are a step below but still code-compliant and reliable.
Breaker cost over time: Siemens wins on ongoing cost. Every time you add a circuit (new outlet, new appliance, etc.), you're buying a breaker. At $6–$12 per breaker versus $10–$18 for Eaton CH, the savings add up over the life of the panel.
Availability in NJ: Square D has the best supply chain — QO and Homeline breakers are in stock everywhere. Siemens is a close second. Eaton CH breakers sometimes require ordering from a supply house rather than picking up at Home Depot.
Smart home readiness: If you might want energy monitoring or smart breakers in the future, Siemens and Eaton both offer smart breaker add-ons. Square D's Wiser Energy system is an option but requires additional hardware. For full smart panel functionality, you'd want a SPAN or Lumin panel instead — those are a different category entirely.
Warranty: All three brands offer limited lifetime warranties on their panels. In practice, these panels last 25–40 years with no issues.
What we install and why
At Malfettone Electric, we install all three brands based on the homeowner's needs and budget. Our default recommendation for most NJ panel upgrades is Square D QO — the combination of bolt-on reliability, copper bus bars, and unbeatable breaker availability makes it our top pick for homes that need to last. For budget-conscious projects, Siemens delivers excellent value without compromising safety.
We never install Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or any off-brand panels — regardless of price. These are the panels that create fire hazards and insurance problems.
The most important factor isn't the panel brand — it's the quality of the installation. A premium panel installed incorrectly is more dangerous than a standard panel installed by an experienced, licensed electrician who follows NJ code. Make sure your electrician is licensed, pulls the permit, and gets the work inspected.
