What a SPAN Panel Does

The SPAN Panel MAIN 40 is a full replacement for your main breaker panel — 40 circuits, rated for 200A service, NEMA 3R so it can go indoors or outdoors. Physically it does everything your old panel did, and the breakers trip on their own exactly like conventional breakers.

What's different is the controller behind them. Every circuit is metered and switchable, so the panel stops being a box you open twice a year and becomes something you can actually see and steer.

Who It's For in New Jersey

Hudson and Essex County housing is mostly 1890–1960 stock, and a huge share of it still runs on 100 amp service that was sized for gas heat, gas hot water, and one air conditioner. Then an EV shows up, or the boiler dies and a heat pump makes sense, and suddenly the service is the constraint.

The conventional answer is a 200 amp service upgrade — a good answer, and often the right one. But it means a PSE&G or JCP&L disconnect and reconnect, and those scheduling windows currently run two to four weeks after permit approval, longer in the busy spring and fall. And to be clear: a lot of homes do both. If your service is genuinely undersized — an old 60 amp, a deteriorated service entrance, aluminum feeders — the upgrade has to happen regardless, and SPAN can be the panel you land on when it does.

Permits, PSE&G / JCP&L & Timeline

A SPAN install replaces the main panel, so it needs a NJ UCC electrical permit filed with your municipality and a final inspection before the panel is energized. We file it and meet the inspector. Jersey City's online portal turns permits around in 3–5 business days; Hoboken, Montclair, and Cedar Grove run 5–10.

Utility involvement depends on scope. All of Hudson County is PSE&G. Essex is split — Montclair is PSE&G, while parts of Cedar Grove, Verona, and the Caldwells fall under JCP&L. If the meter socket or service entrance is part of the job, the utility pulls and resets the meter, and that adds 2–4 weeks of scheduling after permit approval.

Here's the part worth understanding: a SPAN install on an existing, healthy service often doesn't need the utility at all. That is the whole scheduling advantage. If your service entrance is sound and we're not changing the service size, we can frequently go from permit to inspected panel without ever entering the PSE&G queue.

Can a SPAN panel let me add an EV charger without a 200 amp upgrade?+
Often, yes. SPAN's dynamic load management (PowerUp) watches total household draw in real time and throttles or pauses lower-priority circuits — the EV charger first — before the main breaker ever sees an overload. That lets many 100 amp homes in Jersey City, Hoboken, and Montclair support a Level 2 charger, and sometimes a heat pump too, without enlarging the service. It is not automatic approval: we still run an NEC Article 220 load calculation first, and if your calculated load is already near the main, the honest answer is a service upgrade. But where the numbers work, load management skips the PSE&G scheduling queue entirely.
Do I need a permit for a SPAN panel in NJ?+
Yes. With SPAN, every circuit is already controllable, so you set backup priorities in the app and change them later — and during an outage the panel sheds low-priority circuits automatically to stretch the battery. How long does a SPAN panel installation take?+
About one day on site for a straight panel swap — closer to a day and a half if the service entrance or meter socket also needs replacing. Power is off for most of install day. End to end, from signed estimate to inspection sign-off, plan on two to four weeks: the UCC permit is 3–10 business days depending on the town, and app setup and circuit configuration happen with you at the end of install day.
Does a SPAN panel need Wi-Fi or internet?+
SPAN connects over Wi-Fi and includes a cellular backup radio, so it keeps reporting and controlling circuits when your home internet is down — which matters most in exactly the situation you bought it for, an outage. The panel's protective function is entirely conventional: the breakers trip on their own, independent of the software, and the panel is certified to UL 3141, the smart-panel safety standard. Losing connectivity costs you app control, not protection. We set up the network, the account, and the circuit naming with you before we leave.
Can a landlord monitor individual units with a SPAN panel?+
Within a unit, yes — a SPAN panel gives per-circuit visibility on everything it feeds, which is useful in a two- or three-family where you're trying to find what's driving the house meter. It doesn't replace separate utility metering for each unit, and it can't bill tenants. In Hudson County multi-families we usually look at metering and the SPAN question together, because the answer often is that separating the meters is the higher-value job.
