What a SPAN Panel Does
The SPAN Panel MAIN 40 is a full replacement for your main breaker panel — 40 circuits, rated for 200A service, NEMA 3R so it can go indoors or outdoors. Physically it does everything your old panel did, and the breakers trip on their own exactly like conventional breakers.
What's different is the controller behind them. Every circuit is metered and switchable, so the panel stops being a box you open twice a year and becomes something you can actually see and steer.
Every one of the 40 circuits is metered individually. You see live watts per circuit in the app instead of one number on a PSE&G bill — most homeowners find one or two surprises in the first week.
Turn any circuit on or off from your phone, set schedules, and get an alert when a circuit trips or draws something unusual. Useful for the basement dehumidifier, the pool pump, the garage.
Paired with a Powerwall 3 or similar battery, SPAN replaces the critical-loads subpanel. You choose backup priorities in the app — and change them — and the panel sheds low-priority circuits automatically to make the battery last.
SPAN watches total household draw and throttles lower-priority loads before the main breaker is stressed. This is what lets a 100 amp service carry an EV charger, and sometimes a heat pump, without enlarging the service.
Who It's For in New Jersey
Hudson and Essex County housing is mostly 1890–1960 stock, and a huge share of it still runs on 100 amp service that was sized for gas heat, gas hot water, and one air conditioner. Then an EV shows up, or the boiler dies and a heat pump makes sense, and suddenly the service is the constraint.
The conventional answer is a 200 amp service upgrade — a good answer, and often the right one. But it means a PSE&G or JCP&L disconnect and reconnect, and those scheduling windows currently run two to four weeks after permit approval, longer in the busy spring and fall. And to be clear: a lot of homes do both. If your service is genuinely undersized — an old 60 amp, a deteriorated service entrance, aluminum feeders — the upgrade has to happen regardless, and SPAN can be the panel you land on when it does.

Permits, PSE&G / JCP&L & Timeline
A SPAN install replaces the main panel, so it needs a NJ UCC electrical permit filed with your municipality and a final inspection before the panel is energized. We file it and meet the inspector. Jersey City's online portal turns permits around in 3–5 business days; Hoboken, Montclair, and Cedar Grove run 5–10.
Utility involvement depends on scope. All of Hudson County is PSE&G. Essex is split — Montclair is PSE&G, while parts of Cedar Grove, Verona, and the Caldwells fall under JCP&L. If the meter socket or service entrance is part of the job, the utility pulls and resets the meter, and that adds 2–4 weeks of scheduling after permit approval.
Here's the part worth understanding: a SPAN install on an existing, healthy service often doesn't need the utility at all. That is the whole scheduling advantage. If your service entrance is sound and we're not changing the service size, we can frequently go from permit to inspected panel without ever entering the PSE&G queue.

A SPAN panel is two installations in one. The first is ordinary electrical work, and it has to be done to the same standard as any service change — grounding, bonding, torque, a labeled directory. The second is a networked device that has to join your Wi-Fi, hold a cellular fallback, authenticate an account, and be configured with priorities that make sense for your household.
Plenty of good electricians finish the first half and hand you a QR code for the second. That's where smart panel installs go sideways — a panel full of circuits named “Breaker 14” is a panel nobody ever opens the app for.
