When NJ homeowners research a panel upgrade, they quickly hit the four names that dominate American residential panels: Square D QO, Square D Homeline, Eaton CH, and Eaton BR. Supply-house guys argue about these lines like they're sports teams. Here's the practical version, from a family that has installed all four across Hudson and Essex County since 1977.

The Two-Tier System Both Brands Use

Square D (Schneider Electric) and Eaton each split their residential offering into a premium line and a value line:

• Square D QO — premium. Compact 3/4-inch breakers, the famous Visi-Trip red flag that shows you exactly which breaker tripped, plug-on neutral options for fast AFCI/GFCI installs, and a reputation for crisp, consistent trip behavior.
• Square D Homeline — value. Standard 1-inch breakers, same UL 489 listing, simpler construction, noticeably cheaper per breaker and per loaded panel.
• Eaton CH — premium. 3/4-inch "sandwich-style" breakers with a distinctive tan handle, backed by Eaton's limited lifetime warranty on CH breakers, plug-on neutral available.
• Eaton BR — value. Standard 1-inch black-handle breakers, descended from the old Bryant line (that's the "BR"), everywhere in NJ supply houses and big-box stores.

So Which Do We Install?

For main panels, we default to the premium lines — QO or CH. Over decades of service calls, the things you appreciate are exactly what the premium lines buy: instantly spotting the tripped breaker at 11pm (Visi-Trip), plug-on neutral making today's AFCI/GFCI-heavy code requirements cleaner, and denser panels that leave room for the EV charger circuit you'll want in five years. Between QO and CH, honestly, you're choosing between two excellent products — availability and the existing panel brand usually decide it.

Homeline and BR are not "bad." They carry the same UL listing and pass the same NJ inspections. For a detached-garage subpanel, a rental unit, or a tight budget, they're the sensible call — we'd rather see a new Homeline panel than a 60-year-old fuse box or a Federal Pacific deathtrap any day of the week.

The Rule That Actually Matters: Don't Mix Brands

A breaker must be listed for the panel it sits in. An Eaton breaker in a Square D panel (or vice versa) that isn't UL-classified for that specific use is a code violation, a warranty void, and something NJ home inspectors flag constantly on resale. Eaton does make UL-classified breakers approved for certain other manufacturers' panels — but "it snaps in and fits" is not the standard. If your panel has a mixed bag of brands, have it evaluated; correcting it is cheap insurance.
